Golden Globe Awards: Mostly a Winner

So did you watch the Golden Globes last night? Nothing really shocking on the movie front (save for maybe a win by the always awesome Paul Giamatti). On the TV side of things, there were some welcome surprises (Katey Sagal picking up the trophy after all the characters she’s brought to our screens; Peg Bundy is probably everyone’s first thought, but don’t forget Leela!), a deserved victory for a new kid on the block (Steve Buscemi taking home the prize for Boardwalk Empire; he was great as Nucky, but Jon Hamm had my vote), and yet another win for Al Pacino in one of the most tedious television movies in recent memory (sorry You Don’t Know Jack fans… if you’re out there). As for host Ricky Gervais, I know there’s been a lot of backlash. He crossed a line, he was “mean-spirited,” he was “sinister” (these last two observations came courtesy of presenter Robert Downey Jr., but while Gervais’ other targets played it like deer caught in headlights, Downey Jr. followed the host’s lead with a highly suggestive introduction to the Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical nominees. Me? I thought he was a riot. In the end most of the winners didn’t disappoint, and love him or hate him, Gervais was a memorable host, which is more than you can say for many a past emcee.
